Papers, 1936-1993.

The material includes correspondence, reports, photographs, patents, publications, university lecture notes and his dissertation. Most of the papers relate to Cole's research with the Underwater Explosives Research Laboratory (UERL) at WHOI. "The Sign Test", unpublished report provides an analysis of data and an outline of statistical methods for explosives research. There is correspondence with WHOI Directors Paul Fye and John Steele relating to Cole's presidency of WHOI's Associate Program, and his involvement with various committees of the WHOI Board of Trustees. The material contains his undergraduate lecture notes and reports and Ph. D. dissertation from Columbia University. There is also a patent by Coles and Richard M. Brown, "Optical Device for Intergrating Functions". The Waterways Experiment Station in Mississippi, for which Coles was a consultant, contains correspondence with Fye and others and related to a wave action study. There is also a journal review of a book, "Physical Principles of Chemistry", which Coles co-authored with Robert H. Cole, a former WHOI scientist.

Robert Hugh Cole was born in 1914 in Oberlin, Ohio and died in 1990 at Brown University where he was Professor Emeritus. He had taught and done research at Brown University for 43 years. He received a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1935 and Ph.D. in 1940 in physics from Harvard University. James Stacy "Spike" Coles was a chemist. While at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), he was the supervisor of the Underwater Explosives Research Laboratory (UERL). This research was critical to the allied anti-submarine warfare effort. He was on the faculty of City College of New York, a professor at Brown University and eventually became the President of Bowdoin College.
